I watched The Aviator a few months ago, without knowing anything about Hughes, and found it fascinating. As soon as the film finished I obviously ruished to the internet to find out what was fact, and what was fiction. He really was an amazing chap, and it goes to show that sometimes being a little strange does not have to hold a person back in life. Was pleased to also read that he built the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, so that his legacy lives on, and all that wealth was not wasted.

Wow, what a strange tale. I knew Howard Hughes was rather strange, but hadn’t realised quite how strange! Thank you for a fascinating story – when we’re through our current difficulties and have more time I hope that I can find out more about him. I never cease to be amazed by what the rich and/or famous can get away with!

I have to pull you up on an important point – Hell’s Angels is rubbish. I know, I tried to watch it and could not get though to the ariel stuff which is supposed to be interesting.

FP, whilst I cannot question your understanding of HH’s condition, I feel you let yourself down by merely repeating what other people have said about this film. As punishment I think you should sit through the whole thing. I fear you may not survive.

Thanks Socrates, the formulation is not exhaustive I grant. In ICD-10 F80-89 I don’t see any evidence for anything other than F84 Pervasive developmental disorders which includes autism.

Whilst Hughes could be on the autism spectrum he is unlikely to have always shown a disabling amount of socio-emotional reciprocity as he was married two or maybe three times and dated a large number of women. As a diagnosis it also wouldn’t full explain the marked deterioration in his later life.

What a terrible shame… mainly for all of the people who lost their jobs as a result of Hughes’ illness. It just goes to show that the crazy actions of the rich and famous can have huge repercussions; but I doubt that the more lowly of us would be able to get away with equivalent actions within our work places and family lives.
